3. MY FAVOURITE FESTIVAL : Makar
Sankranti
My favourite festival is Makar
Sankranti. It is the festival of kites'. It comes on the 14th of January every year.
Children get busy preparing for the festival many days in advance. They get big
reels of string, get kites and keep them ready to fly. On the festival day men,
women and children go to terraces and house roofs to fly kites. The sky is
covered with coloured kites. There are kite fights. Everyone tries to cut off
the string of his opponent's kite. It
is a great fun. I love to participate in kite fights so Makar Sankranti is my
favourite festival. On this day we eat special festival sweets made of sesame
and Jaggery.
4. HOLI :
Next to Diwali, Holi is the most
important Hindu festival. It is celebrated throughout India. The Holi festival
is the celebration of Prahlad's victory over Holika. On the Holi day, people go
about yelling, dancing. They threw coloured water at one another. They throw
coloured powders. By evening, huge heaps of firewood, that can be burnt, stand
ready in the yards and open places. They are lighted at a fixed moment. They go
up in flames. People worship these Holi bonfires.
5. MUHARRAM :
Muharram is the first month of the
Muslim calendar. It is a month of sorrow because Imam Hussain and his 72 followers were killed in this month.
They fought against the dishonest and cruel Khalifa, Yazeed, for truth and
Justice and sacrificed their lives. The Muslims all over the world remember these
martyrs even today. In this month, the Muslims hold Majlis and recite Marasiyas. Some
Muslims put on black clothes as a mark
of sorrow. In India, on the tenth day of Muharram Tazia processions are taken
out. These Tazias are remind of noble sacrifices of Imam Hussain and his
followers. Non Muslims also join the Tazia processions. What a celebration of
sorrow!
